EC/External Cup – external headset:
Headset assemblies designated EC / External Cup are also referred to as external or classic headsets. These headsets require a frame designed specifically for them, with an exact match for the bearing cups. ‘External Cup’ refers to the relatively large projection of the bearing cups on the head tube, whilst ‘EC44’, for example, denotes the installation dimension, the outer diameter of the bearing cup and the inner diameter of the bearing cups in the frame. The headsets must be pressed in using a special tool, and the frame must be cleanly pre-milled.
