The Zipp 353 NSW wheelset, WH-353-NSW-B1:

The 353 NSW is Zipp’s most advanced wheelset in every respect and also the first Zipp wheelset to be compatible with SRAM AXS. Designed for racing cyclists, it is a lightweight wheelset for climbers, featuring ceramic bearings and Zipp’s most advanced rim technology for impressive durability and aerodynamics. The 353 NSW rim seamlessly integrates the Zipp AXS wheel sensor for accurate tyre pressure monitoring on the bike.

With its wavy, 45 mm-high rim profile, the 353 NSW delivers speed on any terrain with world-class aerodynamic efficiency and crosswind stability. The 353 NSW is Zipp’s lightest tubeless wheelset to date, making it a fast puncher ready to fight its way into the breakaway. The use of hookless (straight) rims in the 353 NSW is a key part of Making You Faster. With Hookless, the transition between tyre and rim is smoother and more aerodynamic. Zipp’s hookless rims feature more efficient resin distribution, resulting in lighter and stronger wheels. The Sawtooth rim profile of the Zipp 353 NSW with Hyperfoils optimises aerodynamic efficiency and crosswind stability. The Sawtooth design also ensures the rim is structurally strong yet lightweight. This helps you accelerate out of corners and maintain that speed regardless of the terrain, particularly on short, sharp climbs. The Zipp 353 NSW utilises the TSE (Total System Efficiency) approach to wheel design and overcoming specific speed barriers: wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance and vibration losses. The 25 mm internal rim width is perfect for riding wider, tubeless tyres at reduced air pressure.

Zipp AXS wheel sensor:

The sensor can be used with a tubeless setup as well as with inner tubes. Zipp offers special inner tubes for this purpose. Once the sensor is activated, it detects a wheel rotation and then indicates via the green LED light whether the tyre pressure is correct or not. The correct tyre pressure for you can be calculated and saved in the AXS app.

With the AXS pressure sensor, you can monitor and analyse tyre pressure in real time without having to mount an external device on the valve stem. By fine-tuning tyre pressure, riders can optimise their speed and performance in an ever-changing riding environment. Check your tyre pressure immediately before setting off: a green light means you’re good to go. Monitor tyre pressure whilst riding to find the ideal setting and spot problems early.

Zipp 353 NSW Tubeless hookless rim:

the Sawtooth rim with Hyperfoil nodes and HexFin ABLC dimple pattern for maximum aerodynamic performance and crosswind stability with a wave-shaped rim profile. The patented new biomimetic 43mm to 48mm high rim shape achieves something conventional aero wheels cannot: it simultaneously reduces both aerodynamic drag and crosswind susceptibility for the ultimate AeroBalance. Zipp achieves this with a series of patented fin-shaped Hyperfoil profiles along the rim’s inner diameter, which, together with our new HexFin ABLC dimples, ensure improved airflow.

The hookless tubeless rims are suitable for use with tubeless tyres only

Zipp’s patented ABLC rim profile, Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control, reduces air resistance even when the wind strikes the rim at an acute angle rather than head-on. The effective usable angle range here is significantly greater than with comparable rims. This is achieved through a special effect, similar to that seen on a golf ball. This is why Zipp wheelsets feature numerous small dimples on the rim surface. In addition, Zipp utilises VCLC technology – Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control – whereby highly shock-absorbing, visco-elastic materials are incorporated into the carbon matrix. ZIPP’s Carbon Bridge technology uses Kevlar fibres woven into the edge area of the carbon matrix to increase impact resistance. The deep sidewalls further dampen vibrations. External spoke nipples also ensure easier maintenance without any aerodynamic disadvantage.

Zipp TSE

The Zipp wheels were developed using the Total System Efficiency approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers encountered under realistic riding conditions. These include not only wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, but also vibration losses on poor road surfaces.

Zipp ZR1 SL Disc Centerlock Hubs:

Zipp’s ZR1 SL is a race-ready, lightweight hub set designed for high performance and durability. The SL version is based on the ZR1 hub and features a lighter hub shell and bearing system. Developed in Germany, the ZR1 SL hubset with high-end ceramic hub bearings features an improved seal design and faster response thanks to the freehub body’s 66 engagement points. It incorporates key technologies from the Zipp Cognition hubs. The seal design is based on Cognition, with a larger dust cap behind the freehub body and improved seals for greater protection. The bearing size is also the same as on the Cognition, although the Cognition uses premium bearings. The six pawls are staggered to operate in two groups of three. Three pawls are always engaged at any given time. This design creates a quick engagement feel with 66 engagement points. The freehub body is designed so that the pawls remain in place during disassembly to simplify maintenance. Zipp hubs are designed for use with J-bend spokes, the most popular type of spoke today.

Important note:

  • Zipp rimless rims are NOT compatible with tyres that require a minimum pressure of more than 5 bar (73 psi). Please adhere to the minimum air pressure recommended by the tyre manufacturer, which is indicated on your tyre. Zipp rimless wheel and tyre systems should never be inflated to more than 5 bar (73 psi).
  • Provided they are fitted with tubeless beads, wider gravel tyres ridden at lower pressures can generally also be used on hookless rims. If in doubt, you should contact the tyre manufacturer.
  • Zipp’s tubeless rims are only suitable for tubeless tyres. Inner tubes are fine, but the tyre must have tubeless beads to ensure a secure fit.
  • Zipp wheels with rimless rims meet existing industry standards for the dimensions that control the tyre fit. The tyre manufacturer ultimately determines the compatibility of its tyre with these standards. Zipp actively collaborates with tyre manufacturers on the ISO and ETRTO committees to develop uniform international standards for tubeless road bike tyres.
  • Therefore, any tubeless tyre that meets these international standards should be compatible. However, tyre brands have the right to determine which products are compatible with clincher-free rims and which are not.
  • If you are interested in a tyre that is not listed here, you should check with the tyre manufacturer or visit their website to find out whether the tyre is compatible with Zipp wheels.
  • Zipp’s tyre pressure guide will help you determine your ideal pressure. Consider a wider tyre width if the recommended pressure for your setup is too close to 73 psi / 5 bar.
  • This table is updated regularly; please check back for updates.

Hookless TSS (Tubeless Straight Side) rims:

are characterised by a hookless rim profile. Unlike hook rims, they do not have a mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. On hookless rims, the tyre is held in place solely by the tyre bead and the frictional forces between the tyre and the rim sidewall. On a hooked rim, the tyre is additionally secured by the mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. Hookless setups are more sensitive to potential deviations in system tolerances. It is therefore essential that all specifications regarding hookless compatibility provided by tyre and wheel manufacturers are followed. Adherence to the maximum tyre pressure and maximum inner rim width is crucial for the safe use of hookless rims. The maximum specifications for air pressure and inner rim width when fitting to hookless rims and hooked rims can be found on the tyre packaging.
