The Flat Mount disc brake standard was developed for road bikes.
Flat Mount 140: this standard is designed exclusively for 140 mm and 160 mm brake discs. For the front brake, an adapter is always required for mounting on the fork. By turning it round, this increases the spacing, making it suitable for both 140 mm and 160 mm discs. The rear disc brake is bolted directly onto the frame for 140 mm discs. An adapter is always required for 160 mm brake discs.
Flat Mount 160 is found on gravel and MTB frames, for 160 mm and 180 mm brake discs. With the Flat Mount 160 standard, the brake caliper mount is further away from the hub axle. This allows for the fitting of 160 mm and 180 mm brake discs. 140 mm brake discs cannot be fitted.
