With smaller gear steps on the crankset (24, 32, 42) and, optionally, a cassette with a 36-tooth sprocket as the largest cog. This allows Shimano to achieve a significantly smoother gear progression with exceptionally high performance.

Shimano has retained the tried-and-tested system of riveting the large sprockets to a spider in the current XT cassette. However, the new cassettes are fitted with catch pins that prevent the chain from slipping between the spokes and the cassette. In the new cassette, the end ring is made of aluminium and the steel quality has been further improved.
