Zipp WH-303-XPS-A1
The Zipp 303 XPLR S is a powerful upgrade for all gravel grinders, without the hefty price tag. Whilst this wheelset incorporates many of the key innovations of our premium gravel wheelset, it is more affordable and just as robust – ideal for demanding gravel riders. This wheelset is one of the fastest on gravel. Thanks to its mega-wide rims, which pair perfectly with the recommended tyres, it reduces air resistance and vibrations caused by uneven surfaces, which otherwise act as a barrier and slow the rider down. To counteract this, Zipp has specifically applied its Total System Efficiency design philosophy to the challenges of gravel riding. The wide rim profile increases tyre volume, allowing for lower tyre pressures without compromising stability. This means you dampen vibrations from the ground whilst maintaining the necessary grip for corners and traction for steep climbs. The rim profile also creates a seamless transition to the gravel tyres, ensuring efficient aerodynamics on gravel. And despite its width, the 303 XPLR S wheelset remains lightweight, so you can experience those fulfilling days in the saddle as quickly and refreshed as possible. The Zipp 303 XPLR S is only compatible with approved tyres.
Zipp 303 XPLR S Tubeless hookless rim:
The 303 XPLR rim design delivers measurably higher speeds by allowing for lower tyre pressure than previous wheels. A rider travelling at 32 km/h on 40 mm-wide gravel tyres saves around 8 watts at 28 psi (1.9 bar) compared to a conventional gravel wheel with 40 mm-wide tyres and 36 psi (2.5 bar)
The taller and wider rim design of the 303 XPLR S delivers improved aerodynamics. At an average race speed (approx. 29–36 km/h), our internal tests at Zipp showed an energy saving of 2 watts due to improved aerodynamics compared to a competitor’s wheel. The advantage increased to 10 watts or more when speeds exceeded 53 km/h on descents and other fast sections.
The hookless tubeless rims are only suitable for use with tubeless tyres
Zipp’s patented ABLC rim profile, Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control, reduces drag even when the wind strikes the rim at an acute angle rather than head-on. The effective usable angle range here is significantly greater than with comparable rims. This is achieved through a special effect, similar to that seen on a golf ball. This is why Zipp wheelsets feature numerous small dimples on the rim surface. In addition, Zipp utilises VCLC technology (Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control), which involves incorporating highly shock-absorbing, visco-elastic materials into the carbon matrix. ZIPP’s Carbon Bridge technology uses Kevlar fibres woven into the edge area of the carbon matrix to increase impact resistance. The deep sidewalls further dampen vibrations. External spoke nipples also ensure easier maintenance without any aerodynamic disadvantage.
Zipp TSE
The 101 XPLR wheels were developed using the Total System Efficiency approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers encountered under realistic riding conditions. These include not only wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, but also vibration losses on poor road surfaces.
Zipp 76/176 Disc Centerlock Hubs:
This hub set features a freehub body system with 36 engagement points and high-quality seals. The Zipp hubs are designed for use with J-bend spokes, currently the most popular type of spoke. J-bend spokes are widely available and easier to replace.

Zipp spokes:
Front and rear wheels with 28 Sapim CX Sprint stainless steel J-bend aero spokes.
Important note:
- Zipp rimless rims are NOT compatible with tyres that require a minimum pressure of more than 5 bar (73 psi). Please adhere to the minimum air pressure recommended by the tyre manufacturer, which is indicated on your tyre. Zipp rimless wheel and tyre systems should never be inflated to more than 5 bar (73 psi).
- Provided they are fitted with tubeless beads, wider gravel tyres ridden at lower pressures can generally also be used on rimless rims. If in doubt, you should contact the tyre manufacturer.
- Zipp’s tubeless rims are only suitable for tubeless tyres. Inner tubes are fine, but the tyre must have tubeless beads to ensure a secure fit.
- Zipp wheelsets with rimless rims meet existing industry standards for the dimensions that control the tyre fit. Ultimately, the tyre manufacturer determines the compatibility of its tyre with these standards. Zipp actively collaborates with tyre manufacturers on the ISO and ETRTO committees to develop uniform international standards for tubeless road bike tyres.
- Therefore, any tubeless tyre that meets these international standards should be compatible. However, tyre brands have the right to determine which products are compatible with clincher-free rims and which are not.
- If you are interested in a tyre that is not listed here, you should check with the tyre manufacturer or visit their website to find out whether the tyre is compatible with Zipp wheels.
- Zipp’s tyre pressure guide will help you determine your ideal pressure. Consider a wider tyre width if the recommended pressure for your setup is too close to 73 psi / 5 bar.

Hookless TSS (Tubeless Straight Side) rims:
are characterised by a hookless rim profile. Unlike hooked rims, they lack a mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. On hookless rims, the tyre is held in place solely by the tyre bead and the frictional forces between the tyre and the rim sidewall. On a hooked rim, the tyre is additionally secured by the mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. Hookless setups are more sensitive to potential deviations in system tolerances. It is therefore essential that all specifications regarding hookless compatibility provided by tyre and wheel manufacturers are followed. Adherence to the maximum tyre pressure and maximum inner rim width is crucial for the safe use of hookless rims. The maximum specifications for air pressure and inner rim width when fitting to hookless rims and rim flanges can be found on the tyre packaging.
