The new Zipp 404 wheelsets, weighing just 1450 grams, are significantly lighter than the previous model. With the new hookless tubeless-ready rims, they are suitable for tubeless tyres only.

The Zipp 404 Firecrest Disc wheels feature Tubeless UST rims and 58 mm high carbon rims. The current 404 Firecrest Disc wheelset successfully combines disc brake compatibility with the reliability and technological heritage of Zipp’s most successful wheel, the 404. The Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels are the perfect competition wheelset for all applications, from flat stages and mountain stages to cyclo-cross. Thanks to their perfect aerodynamics, the Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels offer significant power savings compared to other 50 mm high aero wheels. Despite their low weight, the Zipp 404 wheels are approved for riders weighing up to 113 kg

Zipp 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc Rim:

The tubeless rims are designed for UST (Unvented Tubeless) fitting of tubeless tyres. This reduces rolling resistance and increases puncture resistance. Thanks to the new inner rim profile, fitting the tyres is as straightforward as fitting standard tyres with inner tubes.

The hookless tubeless rims are only suitable for use with tubeless tyres

Zipp’s patented ABLC rim profile, Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control, reduces drag even when the wind strikes the rim at an acute angle rather than head-on. The effective usable angle range is significantly greater here than with comparable rims. This is achieved through a special effect, similar to that seen on a golf ball. This is why Zipp wheelsets feature numerous small dimples on the rim surface. In addition, Zipp utilises VCLC technology (Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control), which involves incorporating highly shock-absorbing, visco-elastic materials into the carbon matrix. ZIPP’s Carbon Bridge technology uses Kevlar fibres woven into the edge area of the carbon matrix to increase impact resistance. The deep sidewalls further dampen vibrations. External spoke nipples also ensure easier maintenance without any aerodynamic disadvantage.

Zipp ZR1 Disc Centerlock Hubs:

This hub set features an improved seal design and faster response thanks to the freehub body’s 66 engagement points. The hub set’s durability was proven through more than 58,500 km of test rides, which formed part of 3,222 hours of testing. It incorporates key technologies from the Zipp Cognition hubs. The seal design is based on Cognition, with a larger dust cap behind the freehub body and improved seals for greater protection. The bearing size is also the same as on the Cognition, although the Cognition uses premium bearings. The six pawls are staggered to operate in two groups of three. Three pawls are always engaged at any given time. This design creates a quick engagement feel with 66 engagement points. The freehub body is designed so that the pawls remain in place during disassembly to simplify maintenance. Zipp hubs are designed for use with J-bend spokes, the most popular type of spoke today. J-bend spokes are widely available and easier to replace.

Front and rear wheels feature 24 Sapim CX Sprint stainless steel straight-pull aero spokes, laced in a 2-cross pattern. The Firecrest V3 features a new lacing pattern for even greater stability and durability
