Shimano Disc Adapter
The Shimano Disc Adapter SM MA F203 PP can be used to fit
- the front disc brake with a 180 mm rotor on forks with a Post Mount 6 disc brake mount
- the front disc brake with a 160 mm rotor on forks with a Post Mount 5 disc brake mount
- rear disc brakes with a 180 mm rotor on frames with a Post Mount 6 disc brake mount
- rear disc brakes with a 160 mm rotor on frames with a Post Mount 5 disc brake mount
The calipers of the current Shimano disc brakes are all manufactured with the Post Mount 6 / 74 mounting.
With the Post Mount 6 standard, the brake caliper is mounted directly. Lateral alignment is possible via the slotted holes in the brake caliper without washers. Using adapters, it is possible to mount the disc brakes on all forks and rear stays.
The various standards for brake caliper mounting
IS 2000: Side-mounted. An adapter is always required to fit the Shimano Disc; maximum 203 mm, minimum 160 mm on the fork and 140 mm disc size on the frame. Found on older suspension forks and almost all rear triangle frames
Post Mount, PM5: Direct mounting of the Shimano disc with 140 mm brake discs, without an adapter. Maximum 180 mm, minimum 140 mm disc size. Currently found only on rear stays
Post Mount, PM6: Direct mounting of Shimano Disc brakes with 160 mm discs without an adapter. Maximum 203 mm, minimum 160 mm on the fork and 140 mm disc size on the frame. Currently the most common standard on forks, and on some rear triangle frames.
Post Mount, PM7: Direct mounting of Shimano Disc brakes with 180mm discs without an adapter. Maximum 203mm, minimum 180mm disc size. 140mm and 160mm disc sizes are not possible. Found on some enduro suspension forks such as the Magura Thor and on some rear triangle frames such as the Liteville 301.
Post Mount, PM8: Direct mounting without an adapter for Shimano discs with 203mm brake discs. Can only be used with 203mm brake discs. Only found on downhill suspension forks and frames
