Shimano XT Di2 FDM 8070 front derailleur

The Shimano XT 11-speed Di2 electronic components, wireless-enabled via a Bluetooth interface, are designed for use in everything from cross-country to enduro. Thanks to the wireless function, the XT Di2 groupset can be programmed via a smartphone or tablet.

Shimano XT Di2 Front Derailleur FD-M8070

A highlight of the XT Di2 components is the front derailleur. This operates autonomously on demand and guarantees a shifting speed and precision that cannot be achieved with mechanical front derailleurs. Perfectly matched to the new 11-speed MTB components, the XT front derailleurs offer outstanding shifting performance. The derailleur function can be programmed in three modes and can then shift to the next gear fully automatically. The actuators are twice as powerful as their counterparts in the Dura-Ace Di2 and Ultegra Di2 road bike component series, ensuring highly precise shifting even under the most demanding conditions.

Shimano XT FD M8070 front derailleur compatibility:

The new Shimano 11-speed XT Di2 series is compatible with the XT SW-M8050 and XTR SLWM8050 shift levers. The SC-MT800 display is required for the wireless function and as the junction box (Junction Port A). Derailleurs also require derailleur hangers or mounting plates for High Direct or E-Type S3 mounting. The XT FDM8070 front derailleur is also designed for use with Boost cranksets. The maximum shifting capacity is 10 teeth.

Mounting adapters for FD-M8070:

• High Clamp Mount SM-FD905-H :
  Clamp mount on the seat tube approx. 14 cm above the bottom bracket centre. Clamping diameter 34.9 mm, including adapter to 31.8–28.6 mm
• Low Clamp Mount SM-FD905-L:
  Clamp mount on the seat tube approx. 6 cm above the bottom bracket centre. Clamping diameter 34.9 mm, including adapter to 31.8–28.6 mm
• High Direct Mount SM-FD905-D
  Thanks to the slotted hole, the height of the front derailleur can be adjusted. The frame must be designed for direct mounting. This type of mounting is generally referred to as ‘High Direct Mount’ by frame manufacturers.
• Low Direct Mount, E-Type/S3 SM-FD905-E
  The bolt spacing for the E-Type is 22.1 mm with a 3 mm offset, horizontally. The derailleurs can also be fitted as E-Type derailleurs. In this case, the E-Type mounting plate (part no. Y5EC50600) is also required. The frame must be designed for direct mounting. This mounting method is usually referred to by frame manufacturers as E Direct Mount or S3 Direct Mount.

Shimano XT Di2:

Shimano’s XT M8050 Di2 shifting system enables the seamless control and immediate response that only digital shifting with the M8000 Rhythm Step drivetrain offers. The combination of Di2 with close gear ratios means that shifting becomes second nature. Less effort is required when shifting, and superb ergonomics ensure effortless shifting, allowing your hand to remain firmly on the handlebars, so that you always have perfect control over riding manoeuvres and gear changes. With the XT Di2 system, gear changes are virtually effortless, even on the MTB groupset, achieved by briefly or firmly pressing the Firebolt shift levers.

Shimano XT Di2 programming:

Individual assignment of shifting functions and shift levers is possible. Control of the front derailleur can be assigned from the left to the right shift lever, and that of the rear derailleur from the right to the left. The programmable Multi-Shift function allows you to shift through a maximum of all eleven gears at once whilst holding down the shift lever. Furthermore, the entire drivetrain, including the front derailleur and rear derailleur, can be operated using a single Firebolt shifter. Shimano calls this feature Synchro Shift. Depending on the position of the rear derailleur, the front derailleur knows when it needs to shift and carries out the corresponding shifting operations on the crankset. The shifting speed is also programmable.

Shimano Di2 installation:

Installing Shimano Di2 components is almost easier than fitting traditional gear systems. The standardised E-Tube cable connectors and junction boxes ensure straightforward and quick installation. The shift lever(s) are connected to the display. The display acts as Junction Port A and a wireless interface. A cable runs from the display to the junction box (Junction B), and from there the cables run to the rear derailleur, front derailleur and battery. The battery can be mounted externally on the bottle cage, or internally in the seat tube, down tube or steerer tube. Specially designed frames are required for internal cable routing.

Shimano Di2 Junction B Port:

The Junction B distribution box is responsible for connecting the rear derailleur, front derailleur, battery and shift levers. The Junction B port is available in two versions: the internal SMJC41, for fully internal routing, and the SMJC40 for mounting beneath the bottom bracket, should fully internal routing not be possible.

The SMBTC1 battery holder is available as an option. This allows for external mounting of the SMBTR2 round battery. At the same time, the SMBTC1 battery holder provides the Junction B connections – a total of 6 ports – meaning the additional Junction B port is not required. The additional 2 ports not used by the derailleur can be used to power electric suspension components.
