Thanks to the latest developments in electric motors and pedelec designs, it is now possible to carry even heavier loads and cover longer distances, often on uneven terrain. However, this results in greater stress and strain on the wheels and their components.
Hybrid utility wheels from DT Swiss have been specially developed and tested for these increased physical stresses. With an approved maximum system weight of 180 kg, these wheels offer the user lasting reliability and long-term confidence.
Technical expertise accumulated over many years has enabled DT Swiss to become a champion of new technologies, designing specific components to meet rapidly evolving requirements. Like a chain, where every link contributes to the strength of the entire system, every single component of a DT Swiss wheel has been designed for expansion, to enhance performance and the riding experience. Every hub on a hybrid bike has been redesigned with components which – supported by thicker spokes and reinforced rims – transfer the full power of the rider and motor directly to the ground.
DT Swiss HU 1900 Spline Hybrid Hubs:
The DT Swiss straight-pull hub bodies of the Hybrid Spline wheelsets are equipped with reinforced steel hub bodies, oversized ball bearings and reinforced spoke heads. With the optimised hub body, specially designed for extreme braking forces, and the reinforced flange, DT Swiss provides the perfect foundation for extremely stable wheels. Equipped with a Centerlock brake disc mount, the wheels are compatible with all standard systems. Centerlock adapters for 6-bolt brake discs are available separately.
Due to the battery and motor, e-bikes usually weigh more than conventional bikes in the same category. The reinforced hub body offers better resistance to the higher drive torques of the motors and the higher braking torques caused by the additional weight on modern e-touring bikes. These factors improve the hub’s strength and reliability. The torque from the motor and crankset is transmitted via the chain to the cassette and then to the freehub body. To withstand these forces, the hybrid freehub bodies are made from hardened special steel. Compared to conventional aluminium freehub bodies, the hardened special steel offers greater static strength. It also has higher fatigue strength. This means that the steel freehub body exhibits better resistance to minor wear marks and signs of wear on its surface, even after a high number of load cycles and high peak loads caused by acceleration.
DT Swiss Ratchet LN steel freehub body:
The proven DT Swiss Star Ratchet LN system with the toothed disc freehub body allows for easy conversion to various axle or rotor standards. The DT Swiss Ratchet Star rear hubs can be easily converted to fit standard mounts. Thanks to a larger bearing spacing, the hybrid hubs are even more stable than the already excellent predecessor models.
DT Swiss HU 1900 Spline Hybrid Rims:
Built for tough e-bike use, the DT Swiss H 1900 rims offer maximum stability; the rim bed is further reinforced to easily absorb high drive forces. Thanks to new, extra-sturdy rim spokes, the DT Swiss Spline rims are ideally designed for upgrading with a tubeless kit.
If the total weight of the system (bike plus rider) is high on less-than-ideal terrain, the rims may become permanently deformed whilst riding. This subjects the rim and spokes to dynamic stresses, which are counteracted by the rim and spoke tension. This means that the more the rim deforms, the greater the dynamic stress exerted on the spoke holes, thereby compromising the durability of the rim and, consequently, the wheel. The combination of laboratory tests based on real-world recorded loads and the latest FEM analysis has shown that rim height has a positive and significant influence on the overall service life of the rim and, consequently, the wheel. The larger the rim cross-section, the greater the rim’s stiffness and, consequently, its resistance to deformation, even under higher loads. For the HU 1900 SPLINE, DT Swiss has developed an extremely durable rim with a relatively low weight.
Hooked / Crotchet tubeless TC:
‘Hooked’ or ‘Crotchet’ refers to the shape of the rim flange, which features a so-called hook. This aids in securing the tyre bead and ensures reliable performance, even when using high tyre pressure (> 5 bar). ‘Tubeless’ means that the rim can be ridden without an inner tube, although a setup with an inner tube is also possible.
DT Swiss Hybrid 1 Straight Pull Spokes:
To achieve maximum stability, Spline wheelsets use DT Hybrid straight pull spokes. With a reinforced spoke head of 2.34 mm to ensure durability even with a high overall system weight. They are more stable than conventional spokes yet can be trued and replaced using standard tools. The straight-pull lacing allows for precise placement and alignment of the spokes. This optimises wheel stiffness and eliminates any unwanted stress peaks.
When it comes to dynamic stress, the same logic applies to the spoke head as to the rim: under high loads, the spoke heads are subjected to continuous dynamic stress. To address this potential weak point, DT Swiss has reinforced the spoke head to 2.34 mm to ensure durability even with a high overall system weight. The initial tension of the spokes also plays an important role. It is therefore essential that a certain level of spoke tension is maintained in every riding situation to keep the peak loads on the individual components of the wheel set to a minimum. Precise and expert wheel building is therefore of the utmost importance. All DT Swiss wheels are 100% hand-built to allow for particular attention to be paid to spoke tension.
