The Zipp 303 SW wheelset

The 303 SW is a modern, classic wheelset that can be used on the road, on gravel, on cobblestones and in cyclocross. The Zipp AXS wheel sensor is integrated into the 303 SW rim, which accurately monitors tyre pressure on the wheel. This allows you to monitor and analyse tyre pressure in real time without having to attach an external device to the valve stem. Fine-tuning tyre pressure helps riders optimise speed and performance in an ever-changing environment. Before setting off, you should check the pressure straight away; a green light means you’re good to go. Check the pressure whilst riding to find your ideal setting and spot any issues early on.

Zipp AXS wheel sensor:

The sensor can be used with tubeless setups as well as with inner tubes. Zipp has specially designed inner tubes for this purpose. Once the sensor is activated and the wheel has turned, the green LED light indicates whether the tyre pressure is correct or not. The correct tyre pressure can be calculated and saved in the AXS app.

Zipp 303 SW Tubeless Hookless Rim:

The 40 mm high rim design of the 303 SW is based on the design of the 303 XPLR for gravel. The wide rim design ensures high aerodynamic efficiency and low rolling resistance on a wide tyre platform, which is designed for modern riding with lower tyre pressure. The rim profile ensures low air resistance and an improved transition between the rim and tyre, which increases aerodynamic efficiency with wider tyres. The wide rim profile also ensures less tyre deformation and thus lower rolling resistance. The combination of the wider tyre, greater tyre volume and lower tyre pressure helps to reduce rider fatigue by smoothing out the ride in challenging road conditions – the tyre and wheel system absorbs the shocks, not the rider. A revised carbon lay-up and design has enabled the already super-sturdy 303 SW to achieve an almost 10 per cent improvement in impact resistance whilst maintaining a low weight. The 303 SW is optimised for tyres with a width of 30 to 35 mm, with the best performance achieved with 35 mm tyres. The 303 SW rims feature a special shape that protects the tyre from impacts that would otherwise cause a puncture. At the heart of the system is the ZR1 hubset, which now features stainless steel bearings for improved durability and smoother running.

The hookless tubeless rims are only suitable for use with tubeless tyres

Thanks to Zipp’s patented ABLC rim profile (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control), drag is reduced even when the wind strikes the rim at an acute angle rather than head-on. The effective usable angle range here is significantly greater than with comparable rims. This is achieved through a special effect, similar to that seen on a golf ball. This is why Zipp wheelsets feature numerous small dimples on the rim surface. In addition, Zipp utilises VCLC technology (Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control), which involves incorporating highly shock-absorbing, visco-elastic materials into the carbon matrix. ZIPP’s Carbon Bridge technology uses Kevlar fibres woven into the edge area of the carbon matrix to increase impact resistance. The deep sidewalls further dampen vibrations. External spoke nipples also ensure easier maintenance without any aerodynamic disadvantage.

Zipp TSE

The Zipp wheels were developed using the Total System Efficiency approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers encountered under realistic riding conditions. These include not only wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance, but also vibration losses on poor road surfaces.

Zipp ZR1 Disc Centerlock Hubs:

The ZR1 DB hubset, developed in Germany, features an improved seal design and faster response thanks to the freehub body’s 66 engagement points. This hubset features an improved seal design and faster response thanks to the freehub body’s 66 engagement points. Our engineers spent more than two years developing the ZR1. Proving the hubset’s durability involved more than 58,500 km of test riding, which formed part of 3,222 hours of testing. It incorporates key technologies from the Zipp Cognition hubs. The seal design is based on Cognition, with a larger dust cap behind the freehub body and improved seals for greater protection. The bearing size is also the same as on the Cognition, although the Cognition uses premium bearings. The six pawls are staggered to operate in two groups of three. Three pawls are always engaged at any given time. This design creates a quick engagement feel with 66 engagement points. The freehub body is designed so that the pawls remain in place during disassembly to simplify maintenance. Zipp hubs are designed for use with J-bend spokes, the most popular type of spoke today.

Important note:

  • Zipp rimless rims are NOT compatible with tyres that require a minimum pressure of more than 5 bar (73 psi). Please adhere to the minimum air pressure recommended by the tyre manufacturer, which is indicated on your tyre. Zipp rimless wheel and tyre systems should never be inflated to more than 5 bar (73 psi).
  • Provided they are fitted with tubeless beads, wider gravel tyres ridden at lower pressures can generally also be used on hookless rims. If in doubt, you should contact the tyre manufacturer.
  • Zipp’s tubeless rims are only suitable for tubeless tyres. Inner tubes are fine, but the tyre must have tubeless beads to ensure a secure fit.
  • Zipp wheels with rimless rims meet existing industry standards for the dimensions that control the tyre fit. The tyre manufacturer ultimately determines the compatibility of its tyre with these standards. Zipp actively collaborates with tyre manufacturers on the ISO and ETRTO committees to develop uniform international standards for tubeless road bike tyres.
  • Therefore, any tubeless tyre that meets these international standards should be compatible. However, tyre brands have the right to determine which products are compatible with clincher-free rims and which are not.
  • If you are interested in a tyre that is not listed here, you should check with the tyre manufacturer or visit their website to find out whether the tyre is compatible with Zipp wheels.
  • Zipp’s tyre pressure guide will help you determine your ideal pressure. Consider a wider tyre width if the recommended pressure for your setup is too close to 73 psi / 5 bar.
  • This table is updated regularly; please check back for updates.

Hookless TSS (Tubeless Straight Side) rims:

are characterised by a hookless rim profile. Unlike hook rims, they do not have a mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. On hookless rims, the tyre is held in place solely by the tyre bead and the frictional forces between the tyre and the rim sidewall. On a hooked rim, the tyre is additionally secured by the mechanical interlock between the tyre bead and the rim flange. Hookless setups are more sensitive to potential deviations in system tolerances. It is therefore essential that all specifications regarding hookless compatibility provided by tyre and wheel manufacturers are followed. Adherence to the maximum tyre pressure and maximum inner rim width is crucial for the safe use of hookless rims. The maximum specifications for air pressure and inner rim width when fitting to hookless rims and rim flanges can be found on the tyre packaging.
