Schmidt Son 28 hub dynamo wheel with DT Swiss GR 531 rim
The 28-inch front wheel features the Son 28 dynamo and the extra-robust, wide DT Swiss GR 531 gravel rim with a 24 mm rim width.
We offer the Son 28 dynamo with this wheel as either a quick-release or thru-axle version, and with 6-bolt and Centerlock brake disc mounts
The SON 28 hub dynamo from Schmidt offers excellent smoothness and very high efficiency. Manufactured and developed in Germany, Schmidt dynamos generally last longer than the bikes in which they are fitted. The ideal complement is the Schmidt Edelux lights, as the SonDelux lights are particularly low-loss yet still provide plenty of light even at low speeds.
Schmidt Son 28:
In the standard version, the flange spacing and bearing spacing are increased by 12 mm and 10 mm respectively compared to the SONdelux. Compared to the predecessor model, the SON 28 Classic, idle losses have been reduced by approximately 15 per cent and the weight by 140 g. The SON Schmidt Original Hub Dynamo, 28 Hub Dynamo, has been the standard for high-quality, fail-safe bicycle lighting for years and, as a result of its design, remains unmatched even by new products from much larger companies. The secret lies in its gearless construction using high-quality materials and the adherence to tight tolerances, which is likely only achievable through handcrafting by a dedicated small team. The dynamo is simply switched off electrically. Thanks to optimisation, the no-load losses when switched off amount to just 1 watt and are imperceptible even to the most sensitive riders whilst cycling.
DT Swiss GR 531 DB rim:
The high-end gravel rim, the DT Swiss GR 531 DB, designed for off-road use, made from 500 grams of high-strength aluminium, very sturdy and, with a 24 mm rim width, perfect for wide tyres. With a 24 mm rim width, the DT Swiss GR 531 DB rim is designed for tyre sizes ranging from 30 to 53 mm. Cleanly finished, with a welded joint, CNC-machined sidewalls and a 25 mm high rim bed, the DT Swiss GR 531 offers the ideal rim for building very stable yet lightweight wheelsets.
The DT Swiss GR 531 DB rims are high-end rims featuring a special spoke nipple mount and are supplied with special DT Squorx Pro Head nipples in silver and PHR washers; they must only be laced using PHR washers. Furthermore, the DT RR 481 rims are tubeless-ready.
Wheel building at TNC-Hamburg:
We hand-build these wheels exclusively for you. Thanks to over 30 years’ experience in wheel building, we extract the optimum in concentricity, durability and stiffness from the material. These wheels are, of course, pressure-tested multiple times, and we also pre-load the spokes in both the radial and lateral directions. This eliminates the need for re-truing over a long period of time. We use DT Swiss spokes exclusively. These ensure outstanding durability of the wheelsets. For DH and Enduro use, we recommend brass nipples.
These wheels are custom-made for you, so we cannot offer a right of return for them. Please feel free to enquire about other wheel configurations. We will then send you a quote.
Included in delivery:
Front wheel, fully laced in our workshop and hand-trued with a Son 28 hub dynamo, DT spokes, DT nipples as selected and a DT Swiss rim. Excludes rim tape and valve.

DT Competition spokes:
The double cold-forged spoke made from rust-resistant 18/10 chrome-nickel steel with a tapered middle section for robust, lightweight wheels. We recommend these spokes for virtually all wheels. Extremely durable and sufficiently lightweight, DT Competition spokes enable wheel building of the highest standard. Thanks to the tapered middle section, the spokes absorb movements in the wheel excellently without compromising on lateral stiffness and durability. Weight with nipple approx. 7 grams
DT Swiss Aero Comp spokes:
Designed for stable, laterally stiff yet aerodynamic wheelsets, the DT Swiss Aero Comp spoke is first cold-forged in the middle section to make it lighter and stronger. In a further complex process, it is flat-forged to optimise aerodynamic properties whilst simultaneously increasing material strength. The DT Aero Comp guarantees a balanced combination of stiffness, aerodynamics and durability.
DT Swiss Aero Lite spokes:
The DT Swiss Aerolite spoke is flatter and lighter than any other; the DT Swiss Aerolite spoke features an aerodynamic flat profile and is extremely lightweight. Thanks to the 0.9 x 2.3 mm aerodynamic mid-section, this spoke can be fitted to all standard hubs. The Cold Forging Technology (CFT) developed by DT Swiss makes the reduced and forged DT Aerolite the lightest stainless steel spoke and gives it excellent mechanical properties. Particularly suitable for super-light and fast road or cross-country wheelsets. 64 DT Aerolite spokes weigh an incredible 278 g at a length of 264 mm. Weight per spoke at a length of 264 mm: 4.31 grams
DT Swiss Pro Lock Squorx Pro Head spoke nipples:
The Squorx Pro Head nipples are required for the new DT Swiss rims in the new tubeless-ready series. Want to increase the lifespan of a wheel several-fold? That’s only possible with DT Pro Lock! This nipple features an integrated thread-locking system, developed and manufactured by DT Swiss. The two-component adhesive in the nipple thread prevents the spoke-nipple connection from loosening under the influence of operational loads and the loading and unloading of the wheel whilst riding, thereby ensuring constant spoke tension.
