Wheel building at TNC-Hamburg:

We hand-build these wheels exclusively for you. Thanks to over 30 years’ experience in wheel building, we extract the optimum in concentricity, durability and stiffness from the materials. These wheels are, of course, pressure-tested multiple times, and we also pre-load the spokes in both the radial and lateral directions. This eliminates the need for re-truing over a long period of time. We use DT Swiss spokes exclusively. These ensure outstanding durability of the wheelsets. For enduro use, we recommend brass nipples.

These wheels are made to order specifically for you, so we cannot offer a right of return for them. Please feel free to enquire about other wheel configurations. We will then send you a quote.

e*thirteen Sidekick

The Sidekick hub from e*thirteen is a revolutionary rear hub for mountain bikes that improves suspension performance by eliminating pedal kickback and filtering out chain vibrations. A proprietary freehub mechanism decouples the drivetrain from the rear wheel when coasting, and an adjustable engagement deadband filters out kickback and chain vibrations before they reach the pedals, thereby isolating all pedal feedback from the suspension.

Pedal kickback occurs when the movement of the suspension places tension on the chain, leading to unwanted pedal movement and compromising suspension performance.

The adjustable ratchet allows tool-free adjustment of the engagement point between 12, 15 and 18 degrees to suit the rider’s preferences, bike type and terrain. The chain tension filtered by the deadband ensures that the suspension is not hindered by pedal kickback resistance, resulting in improved, more consistent performance and easier adjustment. Durable 60-inch ratchet ring with an innovative ratchet system that operates quietly and reduces air resistance by disengaging when not pedalling. Less kickback, chain slap and vibrations mean a smoother, more comfortable ride Ultimate reliability: Proven in the World Cup, fully serviceable and serviceable, so you can push your limits with confidence

The Sidekick hub features a unique freewheel mechanism with three primary pawls that engage with a toothed pawl to move the hub body forwards, similar to conventional hubs. However, on the Sidekick hub, these pawls are held in an unlocked position during coasting. When you start pedalling, a patent-pending* ‘pawl pusher’ lifts the pawls into the correct position, thereby activating the pawl. The pusher acts like a ramp, allowing the pawls to slide upwards and engage as the freewheel body rotates.

This pawl pusher is mounted on the hub axle and is controlled by a fourth pawl, which requires minimal force and remains in contact with the pawl. When pedalling begins, the pusher moves through a preset dead zone before engaging with the pawls.

When idling, the pawl can rotate freely in one direction (anti-clockwise), but in the other direction (clockwise) it is precisely matched to the pawl. The freewheel body moves a specific distance relative to the driver before the pawls engage, a movement we refer to as deadband. This deadband absorbs the chain tension resulting from suspension movement, thereby effectively eliminating pedal kickback.

Unlike other back-lash prevention systems, the Sidekick hub allows unimpeded movement of the suspension during the deadband movement, without a spring counteracting the movement. This ensures that the suspension functions naturally and without negative feedback.

Another advantage is reduced air resistance. As the primary pawls only engage when pedalling, rather than constantly ratcheting over the ring, the system operates more quietly and with less friction, resulting in faster acceleration and higher coasting speeds.

Sidekick rear hubs and e-bikes:

Sidekick hubs are compatible with all Class 1 e-bikes; there are additional benefits for e-bike riders!

E-bikes experience the same recoil effect as full-suspension bikes. The difference is that the peaks in chain tension are transmitted to the motor rather than directly to the cranks and pedals. This chain force is not usually felt by the rider at the pedals, but the negative effects on suspension performance are the same.

As e-bike motors operate with a torque sensor, the rider can select the highest deadband setting and still experience rapid engagement of the rear hub. The motor rotates the chainring faster than the rider turns the crankset, so that any slack in the chain is compensated for more quickly.

An additional advantage is that chain vibrations can cause significant noise with certain e-bike motors, such as Shimano EP8 or Bosch CX motors with an internal, counter-rotating clutch. On these bikes, Sidekick can significantly reduce or even eliminate these noises.

DT Competition spokes:

The double cold-forged spoke made from rust-resistant 18/10 chrome-nickel steel with a tapered middle section for robust, lightweight wheels. We recommend these spokes for virtually all wheels. Extremely durable and sufficiently lightweight, DT Competition spokes enable wheel building of the highest standard. Thanks to the tapered middle section, the spokes absorb movements in the wheel exceptionally well, without compromising on lateral stiffness or durability. Weight with nipple approx. 7 grams

DT FR 541 rim

The FR 541 may not be your first rim, but it could well be your last. The new rim shape improves impact resistance and allows you to tackle the trails even harder. It also enhances puncture protection for a reliable ride on rough terrain. Carefully built, it will reward you with resilience and lightness – for a lasting bond. Tests with a leading tyre manufacturer have shown a 17 per cent higher puncture resistance compared to the previous FR 560 rim.

DT Competition spokes:

The double cold-forged spoke made from rust-resistant 18/10 chrome-nickel steel with a tapered middle section for robust, lightweight wheels. We recommend these spokes for virtually all wheels. Extremely durable and sufficiently lightweight, DT Competition spokes enable wheel building at the highest level. Thanks to the tapered section, the spokes absorb wheel movement exceptionally well without compromising lateral stiffness or durability. Weight with nipple approx. 7 grams.

DT Swiss Aero Comp spokes:

Designed for stable, laterally stiff yet aerodynamic wheelsets, the DT Swiss Aero Comp spoke is first cold-forged in the middle section to make it lighter and stronger. In a further complex process, it is flat-forged to optimise aerodynamic properties whilst simultaneously increasing material strength. The DT Aero Comp guarantees a balanced combination of stiffness, aerodynamics and durability.

DT Swiss Revolite spokes:

After several rounds of production, the DT Revolite spoke was given its unique shape – completely new for this product type – which gives the spoke clear advantages such as durability and low weight. The DT Revolite is the ideal choice for riders looking for a spoke that combines durability and low weight. Over several rounds of development, its innovative shape has been optimised to withstand repeated stress and to outperform all other DT Swiss MTB spokes in its weight class in terms of durability. The flat-forging process increases material density, resulting in even greater strength with lower weight. Unlike the classic spoke, the production process for the DT revolite includes an additional step: the DT Swiss-specific reduction method using a cold forging process. The result is a lightweight, double-tapered spoke that increases the strength of the material whilst retaining its valuable elongation properties. The patent-pending forging process ensures a uniform transition between the tapered and forged sections of the spoke, thereby increasing its durability.

DT Squorx spoke nipples:

The DT Swiss Squorx Pro Head nipple combines ease of installation with light weight thanks to the DT Pro Head shape, combined with an additional Torx and square tool socket. The Torx socket provides a larger contact area during wheel building, ensuring that the force from the tool is better distributed across the nipple. The spherical contact area within the rim guarantees perfect alignment with the spoke.
